Using Natural Soap as Shampoo

The benefits of using a natural soap to wash your hair are many.  I suffer from an itchy scalp, which is made worse with the use of regular shampoo.  Most Shampoo contains SLS’s which over time, alter your sebum (the skin’s natural protective layer) which can aggravate itchiness.  I find washing my hair with a natural soap does not lead to an itchy scalp.  Such a relief.  And, as an aside, a high percentage of dandruff is caused by bacteria, so using a natural soap with the addition of tea tree, not only lessens the chance of itchy scalp due to over use of SLS’s but combats the bacteria naturally, often leading to a reduction in dandruff - how cool is that?

In choosing to use a natural soap to wash your hair, you will need to make some adjustments to your routine, particularly if you have longer hair.  People with very short hair can simply use the soap to lather up, rinse off and away they go, however, when using natural soap on longer hair, the alkali affects the tiny overlapping scales on each hair, causing them to lift, and resulting in what I call the “Dreadlock Effect”  It will feel heavy, a bit sticky and can look as though it’s matting.  Not a pleasant experience!  This is easily remedied!

Keep a spray bottle of water with a bit of vinegar in it  in the shower, and use it after washing your hair with Natural Soap - this will counteract the “dreadlock effect”, smoothing the scales by counteracting the alkali in the soap with an acid. It will leave your hair silky soft and shiny too.  Plain White vinegar works, but I like to use Apple Cider vinegar. I am also experimenting with some raspberry vinegar at the moment.

So - give it a try, you may just find that you no longer have to buy expensive shampoos, and your scalp will thank you for it!
